It is the airborne portion of the Air Traffic Control Radar Beacon System. The IFR6000 is a compact, lightweight and weatherproof unit designed for testing transponder modes A/C/S, 1090 MHz ADS-B and 978 MHz UAT, TCAS I and II, and DME. The IFR6000 features an extremely easy to use interface where every parameter the user commonly needs to view is displayed on screen. Technically a transponder is a com- bined radio transmitter and receiver which operates automatically relaying data between aircraft and Air Traffi c Control (ATC) on the ground. The sig- nals sent provide a unique “identity” for each aircraft, essential in crowded airspace to avoid mid-air collisions. Transponders require a warm up before being selected ON or ALT. The STBY position is used to warm up the transponder. In the TEST position the reply light should come on while the selector is held in this position.
The level of protection provided by TCAS equipment depends on the type of transponder the target aircraft is carrying. The level of protection is outlined in Table 1. About Transponders and TCAS To be seen by the TCAS collision-avoidance system on a large aircraft, you must have a transponder. Nothing other than a transponder will, for at least the next decade, protect you from an accident like the 2006 collision between a jet and a glider near Minden. The T³CAS® is an integrated communication and surveillance system that combines multiple, proven products into a single small, lightweight system for advanced safety and ADS-B In and Out functionality.
In addition, the high reliability of the NXT-series greatly enhances the overall validity of the TCAS system reducing Mode S transponder-induced No-Fault-Found (NFF) TCAS failures. Model overview L3Harris’ NXT-600/-800™ Mode S Transponders are ready to support civil, commercial and military aircraft and helicopter manufacturers and owners.
Simultaneous 23 Feb 2014 TCAS works by sending interrogations to other aircraft's transponders. The transponder will reply to the interrogation in a similar way it The CAO amendment also mandates the fitment of Mode S transponder equipment for Mode S/ADS-B transponders and forward fitment of TCAS II version 7.

Thanks to fancy antennas and a little math, TCAS will see this as a very close transponder, start tracking it, and immediately will issue a Resolution Advisory (RA). TCAS II installations and replace the Mode A and C transponder for TCAS II equipped aircraft. A Mode S tran-sponder may be installed to replace a Mode A or C transponder without ne-cessitating the installation of TCAS. However, Mode S is required with TCAS in order to facilitate ID, fl ight status (on ground/in fl ight) and alti-tude. if transponder is in tcas mode and someone fools with qnh setting then you can simulate an aircraft above airfield.but i think that no ra is given below 400 ft i may be wrong would have to chk the notes.but ta still active so just a safety issue with landings and toff i think TA/RA - The transponder is ON and all TA and RA functions of TCAS are operational. TFC - The TCAS/ATC system is ON and all transponder equipped airplanes within approximately 30 NM (40 NM range or less must be selected on some airplanes), and the altitude slice selected by the Altitude Range (ABOVE/N/BELOW) switch are displayed full time (Other, Proximate, TA, and RA traffic).

The TCAS standard uses the standard transponder, having the interrogator on board in addition to the transponder itself. The aircraft periodically broadcasts the interrogation signal. The power is less than from the ground radar, but sufficient to trigger response from aircraft that may be less than a minute of flight.
TCAS I was developed to accommodate the general aviation community and regional airlines. This system identifies traffic in a 35–40 mile range of the aircraft.

ACAS (Airborne Collision and Avoidance System) and TCAS (Traffic Collision and Avoidance System) are systems onboard aircraft that receive transponder signals from nearby aircraft through a series of antennas on the aircraft. This allows the system to calculate the bearing and distance of other nearby aircraft. Working independently from air traffic control, TCAS uses nearby aircraft’s transponder signals to alert pilots to the danger of mid-air collisions. It does so by constructing a three-dimensional map of the airspace through which the aircraft is traveling.
